Why read fairy tales to our children?

By the author Eugenia Kosti.

Fairy tale! A magic word that awakens in all of us childhood memories, beautiful moments with parents, grandparents and stories of incomparable beauty for magical creatures, fairies and elves. But why read fairy tales to our children? Have we ever wondered what they offer our little friends?

Initially, the narration of a fairy tale from parent to child creates warmth and security. Children feel love and confidence that their parents are devoting time to them and are there to care for them. In this way the parent-child relationship becomes stronger.

Fairy tales also convey very important messages, such as friendship, love, respect, diversity and strong family ties. At the same time, they touch on difficult situations such as divorce or the separation of a loved one. Through the plot of fantasy heroes, children are shielded by learning in a tender and effortless way to manage their emotions, such as fear, sadness or shame. The tale does not impose opinions, nor does it have a strictly didactic character. On the contrary, it has a therapeutic effect in a harmonious way.

It is also important to cultivate a child’s imagination, to express his ideas creatively and to enrich his vocabulary. Imagine, after all, that there was a world without imagination, sterile that the only thing that would prevail would be logic. People would be really unhappy. Big and original ideas need imagination from young and old.

At the same time the fairy tale helps the child to concentrate. Even hyperactive children can really concentrate on the power of the words of a fairy tale. Especially when it is done through storytelling, by a loved one, filling them with joy. No matter how tired we are, let us always make sure to read fairy tales to our children just before the end of the day. They really need it! After all, maybe in this way we adults manage to enter their child’s soul and listen to their anxieties!
